On Wednesday, July 13th, Team Residex set out to Souderton, Pennsylvania for the 17th Annual Moyer 5k race, despite the oppressive heat.  Those that competed include Christopher Donaghy, Phyllis Marcucci, and Maureen Algeo, and while both Christopher and Maureen were nursing healing injuries, Phyllis was able to take home the first place title in her age group once again.

The Moyer’s 5k Race and Fit Fest promotes a healthy and active lifestyle for people of all ages.  But not only this, the Moyer 5k also awards the local high school Cross Country athletes with college scholarships.

Shoeboxes for Our Soldiers

Residex  recently adopted the Trunk Monkey platoon serving in Iraq.  Employees collected and packaged everyday items ranging from gum and saving cream to games and magazines in an effort to supplement the soldiers  limited access to the things we take for granted every day.  For our troops the days are long and run together. Receiving a gift from a stranger lets these soldiers know that the citizens back home are thinking about them. The platoon of 28 will receive 30 boxes (a couple to spare and share) in time for Halloween.  A selection of masks and decorations were also shipped in hopes to add a little fun to the festivity.  Commitments from employees will allow Residex to send additional  ‘Shoeboxes for Our Soldiers’ throughout the year.

Achilles Freedom Team – Donation Appeal by Allison Donaghy

It was morning, and the blazing sun beat down on my shoulders, causing millions of jewels of sweat to spring forth from my pores.  As another hidden hill of New York City’s Central Park loomed ahead of me, I allowed my breath to steady, and fall in cadence with my foot fall which gently slapped the hard asphalt.  The hill represented all sorts of physical and mental challenges, and as the gradual incline began to take its toll on my tiring legs, I tried not to let go of the optimistic thought that with each small step, the finish line got closer and closer.

And then suddenly, I came up alongside a young man in a traditional wheelchair.  I noticed that both his legs were missing, but still he vigorously pumped his arms in a circular motion as he hit the tops of the wheels with a constant strength and pace.  His eyes, hardened with an athlete’s focus, were set on the crest of the hill.  His determination was impossible to not notice, and his vigor and courage emanated from him like a powerful aura.  This hill was just another challenge to conquer and write off, amongst a list of many.  With a renewed energy, I forgot about my own pain, shouted to him to keep it up, and began to push harder to the finish.

This is the Achilles Hope and Possibility 5 Miler Race.  This year, on Sunday, June 27th at 8:20 AM, the wheelchair participants took off from the starting line to embark on the five mile course around Central Park in NYC.  This start included not only pushrim wheelchairs, but also those in forearm crutches, and hand crank wheelchairs.  This year, Residex has donated their third hand crank bike to its partner charity, The Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans, just in time for the 8th Hope & Possibility run.  After reaching the 2009 goal of $10,000, thanks to the great support from customers and suppliers, Residex has set a new goal for 2010: $20,000.  Currently, about $8,500 has been raised – enough to supply two hand crank bikes to wounded veterans.  But Residex, with your help, wants to do more.

Through donations, not only are you supporting a great cause, but you are giving hope to wounded veterans that feel debilitated by their injuries.  Racing with the Achilles Foundation allows veterans to rebuild their self esteem, their determination, and their hopes for the future.  It gives them something to focus on and train for, because the sense of accomplishment after finishing a race is like no other.  Racing provides happiness and pride in one’s body, and a hungrier drive to reach higher for new dreams and goals.

Residex had around 40 participants run in the Achilles Hope and Possibility Race this year, including family, employees, friends, and customers.  It is a humbling experience to race alongside these veterans, and an even greater experience to see Residex’s hand crank wheelchairs in use.  Please help Residex reach their goal, and help support a great cause.  Every donation makes a difference, and can help a wounded veteran to reach their own goal.

Team Residex Runs despite the temperature

On July 8th, 2010, eleven Residex representatives, including family members,  braved the 100 degree heat, and set out for the 16th Annual Moyer Indoor Outdoor 5k in Souderton, Pennsylvania.  Even though the 5k race began at 7pm, the temperature was still a record high for the day, and runners were cautioned to watch for signs of dehydration because of the oppressive weather.  Scattered throughout the course there were a number of residents standing at the edge of their driveways, spraying their hoses over the road in a cold rainbow of relief.  Water stops were also vital necessities for the racers, and they were placed close after each mile mark.  However, the heat was not the only obstacle the runners had to take on, and the course offered challenging hills throughout the race.

Nevertheless, this did not stop three Residex representatives from pushing through the race’s difficulties, and taking home prizes.  Three ladies from Team Residex each placed in their respective age groups, leaving Souderton with some very memorable bright, neon socks.

The 5k was not the only event Wednesday evening though, and others participated in the 2 Mile Fitness Walk.  Children also had the pleasure of running their own 1k Kids Race, and there were plenty of fun festivities before and after the race.  The Fit Fest offered adults with free blood pressure screenings, stress management, and other health issues.

Overall, despite the heat, it was a great evening in Souderton, PA.

Cause to Run

Running can be rewarding, life changing, and difficult depending upon the goals that you have set for yourself.   Team Residex consisting of 32 runners/walkers and volunteers made their way to NYC on June 28th for the Hope and Possibility 5-miler in support of the Achilles Freedom Team.  While the goals of each of the participants varied by individual, the event was truly inspiring for all that were in attendance.   In a celebration of running, both able-bodied and disabled athletes, many who were recent veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan pushed their way to the finish line.  Some looking to win a medal, some looking to beat a previous time, and some just looking to finish;  the goals as individual as the challenges each runner faced.

After the race Team Residex was fortunate to have the opportunity to meet Paul McAlister, the rider of the Residex hand crank (pictured below).   Donated to the Freedom Team in January, the hand crank is stationed at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington DC and used by soldiers for both training and racing.

Residex would like to thank everyone that participated in this event and those that made monetary donations to support the Achilles Freedom Team.   To make a donation to the Achilles Freedom Team visit www.firstgiving.com/residex.Achilles Run_2
